During my short trip back home I noticed that the main political arguments during the weekend were mainly about the PL's conference and also about its past.

Listening to certain people talk you could almost get the impression that Malta was some sort of Zimbabwe in the 1970's and 1980's. Good things started happening only when the PN got lawfully elected in 1987. Personally I find this kind of thinking and mentality very worrying to say the least.

Labour did certainly do mistakes during its administration. And rightly so it was voted off in 1987. But to say that everything done during that period was hell for a certain sector and heaven for another is quite unrealistic.

The truth lies somewhere in between. You may have different opinions about how good an administration fared or not but to say everything was wrong (or good) is in my opinion an insult to our own intelligence.

The fact that in 2011 certain people still feel the need to bring up episodes from this period is an indication that politics in Malta are not fought on issues but rather on traditional party cleavages which people still do not want to break up

  1. I think that the main reason why people still bring up episodes from this period is that there was no closure. Anzi! In the same conference PL main figures defined them as 'golden' years. That's why episodes from that period are still brought up. If aspiring leaders of tomorrow view yesterday's episodes as 'golden', it's important to know exactly what they define by golden.
